Commander: Troops Needed in Afghanistan

CBNNews.com - The top military commander in Afghanistan announced today that more troops are "quickly needed" there.
General David McKiernan says that violence in the area is up by about 30 percent. That's because there's been an increase in foreign fighters entering Afghanistan through Pakistan.
Taliban and other terrorist networks have stepped up their attacks. And not since 2001 have so many U.S. soldiers been killed in Afghanistan.

"There are places in the south of Afghanistan, twice the size of Vermont, that have never seen an American troop," McKiernan said. "And these are huge hotbeds of Taliban activity because there aren't any coalition troops down there. So we don't have enough paint to cover the barn as they say."
Just last week, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that several more combat troops could be sent to Afghanistan. However, that might not happen until next spring.
