Vatican Official Blasts Search for Quick Profits

ROME - A top Vatican official blames the world's financial crisis on the search for short-term profits and says it shows what happens when basic rights and the common good are ignored.
The speech by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican's secretary of state, follows Pope Benedict's call for religion to be given more room in society.
Bertone said politics and the market are a means but not an end; and that when God is ignored, the ability to respect basic rights and recognize the common good fades away.
Bertone said some values are universal and non-negotiable: the family based on marriage between a man and a woman and the protection of life from conception to natural death.
