Archbishop Burke Criticizes Democrats

September 30, 2008
ROME - Former St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke says the U.S. Democratic Party risks becoming a "party of death."
In an interview with an Italian Catholic newspaper, Burke is quoted as criticizing the party for its stands on bioethical issues, especially in defense of abortion.
While in St. Louis, Burke was known for his tough doctrinal stands. He left in August to head the Vatican's supreme court.
The paper quotes Burke as saying it pains him to criticize the Democrats because they helped immigrant Catholics in the past to integrate into American society. But he says Democrats who oppose abortion are "unfortunately rare."
