Amy Grant Recalls a Lesson She Learned from Paul Newman

WASHINGTON - Christian singer Amy Grant remembers how star-struck she felt meeting Paul Newman, the Oscar-winning actor who died Friday at the age of 83.

In a 2006 interview, Grant recalled that when she sang at one of Newman's Hole in the Wall camps for terminally ill children, she suddenly saw him riding by on a bicycle.

Inspired by the camp and reminded of the famous bicycle scene from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," Grant says she told Newman what a great man she thought he was. But he laughed and said, "I'm just an old curmudgeon -- never forget that."

Amy Grant says Paul Newman and others have taught her "We're all a bunch of curmudgeons. Every once in a while, we do something good."
