Pastors to Challenge IRS Political Restrictions on Sunday

LYNCHBURG, Va. - A Christian legal group says 33 pastors at churches nationwide will preach sermons this Sunday that evaluate political candidates in light of Scripture.
The Internal Revenue Service code prohibits churches and other tax-exempt organizations from endorsing or opposing candidates.
But the Alliance Defense Fund has offered to represent any of the churches that are threatened with loss of their tax-exempt status, in hopes that courts will declare the IRS restriction unconstitutional.
The fund's Erik Stanley says government has no right to control what pastors preach.
But Rob Stanley of Americans United for Separation of Church and State warns that his organization will notify the IRS of any illegal pulpit politics on Sunday.
