FRESNO, Calif. - A California congregation plans to meet this Sunday to discuss leaving the Presbyterian Church USA over moves by the denomination to allow gays and lesbians to be ordained.
The First Presbyterian Church of Fresno is one of at least three in the Presbytery of San Joaquin taking steps to move to another denomination after the national group's vote in July to drop a requirement that church officials be either chaste or in a male-female marriage.
A majority of the denomination's 173 regional presbyteries would have to approve the change, but some congregations are alarmed that it's even being considered.
The Reverend Jamie Evans of Fresno's First Presbyterian said he's concerned that the denomination is moving away from beliefs decreed by the Bible.
