NEW YORK - Eight scrolls of Hebrew Scriptures taken from a New York City synagogue have been found, and a synagogue employee arrested on charges of stealing them.
The Torahs are valued at around $500,000. They were taken in August from the Jewish Center of Kew Gardens Hills in Queens. Rabbis discovered them missing before a service.
Many of the congregants are Holocaust survivors, and the Torahs had been dedicated to their families.
Police have arrested a maintenance worker and an alleged accomplice on charges of criminal possession of stolen property.
Each Torah is a scroll of parchment containing the first five books of the Hebrew Scriptures.
