Britain Warns of Killer Flu Pandemic

CBNNews.com - A horrific flu pandemic could kill up to 50 million people if the world fails to take the necessary measures to prevent disease, a recent report revealed.

Current systems for spotting emerging diseases are "poorly coordinated," making a widespread epidemic "inevitable," Britain's House of Lords Intergovernmental Organizations Committee reported Wednesday.

"Globalization and changes in lifestyles are giving rise to new infections and providing opportunities for them to spread rapidly throughout the world," committee chairman, Lord Soley explained. "We urgently need better surveillance systems to deal with this problem."

The British government added that, though there has not been a pandemic since 1968, "the next pandemic will kill between two million and 50 million people and between 50,000 and 75,000 in the UK."

The committee warned that more needs to be done to improve rapid-response plans, especially in the third world countries.

They are now calling on key groups like the World Health Organization to come up with the planning and resources they feel they currently lack.
