CBNNews.com - A new law that requires restaurants to post calorie counts on menus has some New Yorkers in shock over just how many calories they're consuming.
Health officials say posting calorie counts will help Americans trim their waist-lines. The law took effect in April, but has not been enforced until now.
The results are catching some people off guard.
"We're from St. Louis Missouri. They don't have them posted there no and I didn't realize how many calories were in what I ate," one person said.
"I was like wow. A hamburger is 1000 I was like oh my god," another restaurant-goer said.
"Restaurants don't want people to know because they're nervous people are going to be upset and they know they are going to have to begin changing their offerings," Cathy Nonas, with the NYC Health department said.
New York restaurants now face a fine up to $2,000 if they don't comply.
Later this year, similar laws will also be put into place in Seattle and San Francisco.
