HAPPY HEALTHY THYROID
The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland at the base of the neck and is in charge of secreting hormones in the body. Hypothryroidism is when the body secretes too little thyroid hormone and hyperthyroidism when it secretes too much. Suzy says there are an estimated 20 million Americans, primarily women, who suffer from thyroid disease yet 60% of the people are unaware. “There’s an epidemic of people who are thyroid sick, and they are being mis-diagnosed,” says Suzy. The reason is because of the widespread use of a standard thyroid blood test which only detects production of the inactive T4 hormone. It is important to be tested for T3 levels. “T3 is the hormone you want in all of your cells,” says Suzy. “T3 will warm you up, make you happy, give you energy and make your hair grow.” Disorder symptoms include: anxiety, cold hands/feet, dry skin/hair, fatigue, hair loss, low body temperature, etc.
Essentially thyroid disease is a problem of inflammation. As the body gets exposed to something it doesn’t like, or has an allergic reaction to it, the body produces inflammatory pain-causing chemicals. The goal then, Suzy says, it to reduce inflammation. Eat fresh, organic foods and use anti-inflammatory spices like turmeric. Eliminate all grains, processed junk food, artificial sweetners and colors, tap water, vegetable oil, drinking from plastic bottles, dairy, and soy or soybeans.
Suzy says probiotics can make a big difference in getting thyroid healthy because 20% of the inactive T4 hormone is converted to active T3 in your gut. Sometimes this is all a person needs with a mild deficiency. Taking B6 or Pyridoxal 5’ Phosphate (a deficiency of this B vitamin can make your immune system more likely to attack your thyroid). Also taking B12 is helpful as it provides energy, sharpness in the brain and a functioning nervous system. Iodine is essential in the production of the thyroid hormone and is part of the backbone of T4. Studies show that normal thyroid function was reestablished in hypothyroid patients by adding zinc. Selenium, which is an antioxidant mineral and is essential for the enzyme which converts the T4 to T3, and should be supplemented. Manganese is critical to mitochondria which converts glucose into energy. Ashwagandha is a botanical that stimulates the production of thyroid hormones both T3 and T4. Resveratrol may help prevent or slow growth of papillary and follicular thyroid cancer. Mullein is an herb that has strong anti-inflammatory properties.
Suzy will show us:
- Himalayan or Celtic Salt (contains necessary minerals for thyroid healthy functions).
- Levothyroxine (top-selling drug but doesn’t work unless the body uses it to convert to T3; some people can’t)
- ThyroScript (a digestive enzyme that Suzy formulated for people struggling with thyroid disease)
- Ashwagandha (herbal supplement helpful in hormone production; helps cope with stress)
- Brazil Nuts (rich in zinc)
- Selenium (mineral necessary for reducing thyroid antibodies)
SUZY’S SYMPTOMS
Suzy dealt with a thyroid disorder in 2007. She was fatigued, easily winded, had black circles under her eyes and had difficulty focusing. Doctors failed to diagnose her. Eventually she had her ferritin (marks stored iron) levels tested and they were dreadfully low which affected her thyroid hormone and caused the fatigue. “If I had been tested properly,” says Suzy, “I would have gotten better within months instead of dragging through my days for several years.” She was never heavy but after getting thyroid healthy, Suzy lost 15 pounds, gained her energy back and wiped years off her face. She recently hosted The Thyroid Summit, a worldwide online event. For more info, please visit www.TheThyroidSummit.com
