The Voice Finalist: Why She Sings for God

By The 700 Club

CBN.com-A TOP-RANKING VOICE When Holly Tucker auditioned for the hit TV show The Voice, Season 4, she was not expecting to make it as far as she did –placing as the Top Six finalist. She had already done the audition circuit before with no success. Holly had tried out for all of the talent shows: American Idol, X Factor, America’s Got Talent, and The Voice. For The Voice, she auditioned for Season 1 in early 2011. At that time, they were interested in her but they didn’t keep her because they wanted to see how she would grow as an artist. Holly admits she burned out on auditioning for these shows so she decided to stop pursuing them.

Earlier this year, Holly happened to be in one of the cities where auditions for The Voice were being held. She had some free time so she thought she would try out. For this audition, Holly got a call back to be on the show for Season 4. Then, she made it to the next level by getting through the Blind Auditions. Holly felt she was there for a reason and that God wanted her to do something big. She was at peace. Holly was picked to be on Grammy-award winning artist Blake Shelton’s team, which she counts working with Blake as one of the most rewarding experiences of her time on the show.

A CHALLENGING TIME
Time on The Voice was a challenge for Holly because she had never been on her own before. For five weeks she was by herself in California in a secular environment. She found it was challenging to keep from being like the world around her. She tried to show love to everyone and not judge. Holly found she spent a lot of times alone. She felt like the enemy was trying to get her alone to get her to fall. During these times she would turn to God and get out her Bible. Holly says this is what got her through.

She would especially hold on to these Bible verses: Jeremiah 29:11 (“For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” NIV) and Joshua 1:9 (Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” NIV)
She had a peace that she was there for a purpose. Holly really had to trust God and He let her know He was with her. She grew in her faith in God and as a singing artist.

WHAT SHE LEARNED THE MOST FROM THE VOICE
One of the biggest lessons Holly learned from her time on The Voice was how to love people without being like them. She felt called to love the people there. After one instance when Holly was uncomfortable with someone’s cursing and they said something to her about it, Holly remembers thinking that God loves these people too. She learned the important lesson of loving people where they were and through what they were going through. It was hard because it was tempting to be like them.

AFTER THE VOICE
After Holly’s elimination from the show, she was pretty depressed. She wasn’t ready to leave. Holly says she got into self- pity. She would miss being there, miss her team mates, and felt there was so much yet to be done. She couldn’t believe it was over.

Shortly after that she was invited to sing “How Great Thou Art” at the 2013 Southern Baptist Convention. Then she had another opportunity to sing at a high school beach camp where 2,200 students attended. Holly was able to interact with kids. It was a wonderful experience because she was able to see 921 teens accept Jesus and watch the mass baptism ceremony. Holly would not have been able to experience this if she was still on The Voice. Holly believes this was God ordained.

Overall, Holly says The Voice was a blessed experience. When she was arriving home late at the airport from California, people came and she was greeted with supportive signs and hugs. She did some radio shows and thousands of people were there. She didn’t have a voice when she got home. Now, Holly cant wait to see where God brings her next. She doesn’t exactly know what God has in store but she has no fear. Holly believes she will do something great with the gifts God has given her. Whatever God has for Holly, giving God the glory is her goal.

HOW GREAT THOU ART
One of the highlights during Holly’s time on The Voice was when she sang the classic Christian hymn “How Great Thou Art.” She had already been singing that song for a couple of years. Then Blake Shelton suggested it for a song for her to sing. She was a little nervous that week about singing it because it could go well or she could get “persecuted” for singing it. She decided she was going to do it and if she had to leave the show that week, that would be the way to go. Holly treated it like a worship song to the Lord, not a performance. She will never forget that moment. Afterwards it ranked high on the charts and got great attention, God rewarded her. (Also, the Oklahoma tornado hit that day.)

Holly says God has had her hand. She worships Him daily and is focused on giving God the glory. It is not about her. “How Great Thou Art” is a true worship song for her. She usually sings all three verses. The second verse in particular has a special meaning for Holly. She thinks about the movie The Passion and what the Lord did for her personally by dying on the Cross.

A LIFE OF FAITH AND MUSIC
Holly grew up in a Christian home. Faith in God and the love of music were always a part of her life for as long as she could remember. She started singing with her parents at a very young age. The family would go to different churches and sing. When she was 7, she had her first featured singing number at church. Her parents noticed that she had better than average musical ability. It was at this point that Holly knew singing was what she wanted to do in life. She wanted to sing songs with great messages, positive music. God had always been a part of Holly’s life. When she was six-years- old she came home from camp and she asked her parents about Jesus. She wanted to understand more about Him and ask Jesus into her heart. Her parents weren’t sure she understood this. Holly insisted that she did understand and she wanted to accept Jesus. She did and the next week she was baptized.

Holly continued in faith and music. She went to college and did not major in music because she didn’t want to be too classically trained. She majored in music entertainment marketing, and is now pursuing speech communications in Spanish. She also has self-released four albums that are available at all events where Holly performs, and at websites such as www.cdbaby.com, iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon, Spotify, SoundCloud, and www.soundboard.com. Fans can listen to or download individual songs.
